TEL AVIV (Sputnik) - The Middle East has recently become the focus of world attention due to the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. On October 27, Israel declared an expansion of its ground operation in the Gaza Strip to destroy Hamas militants and rescue hostages.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was fighting "in the heart" of Gaza City in full coordination with the Israeli air force and navy.
"The IDF is in the heart of Gaza. They came from north and south and attacked in full coordination with the air force and navy," Gallant said in a televised address.
The Israeli defense minister described the Gaza Strip as "the largest terrorist base ever built by humans" and ruled out the possibility of a humanitarian pause in the region before Palestinian militant groups release more than 240 hostages still held in the exclave.
The international pressure on Israel will only grow, but the military operation will continue until the complete victory over Hamas, the minister added.
On October 7, Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel from Gaza, killing and abducting people in neighboring Israeli communities. Israel retaliated with missile strikes and a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people.

Hamas Killed Spanish Citizen Taken Hostage - Reports
A Spanish citizen taken hostage by Palestinian group Hamas on October 7 is confirmed to have been killed, Spanish newspaper El Confidencial reported on Wednesday, citing Israeli sources close to the deceased.
Ivan Illarramendi, 46, was born in the Spanish municipality of Gipuzkoa. He lived in the Israeli kibbutz of Kissufim near the border with the Gaza Strip with his wife, Dafna Garcovich, who had Chilean nationality and Israeli roots, the news outlet reported.
A spokesperson for Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares was cited as saying that the minister was planning to inform Illarramendi's relatives of the tragic news personally.
Neither Illarramendi nor his wife were transferred to the enclave with other Hamas hostages, but rather they were killed earlier, the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Illarramendi reportedly is the second Spanish citizen to die as a result of the escalation of the Hamas attack on Israel.
Later in the day, Israeli Ambassador to Spain Rodica Radian-Gordon said that Illarramendi's wife had also died.
"Our hearts are torn by the news of the brutal murder of Ivan Illarramendi. He has been identified a month after the terrorist massacre committed by Hamas in Israel, along with his wife Dafna Garcovich," the ambassador wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Hamas urges Washington to stop thinking about 'illusions' about who will rule Gaza after Israeli operation, politburo member says
The Palestinian movement Hamas calls on Washington to stop having "illusions" about who will rule the Gaza Strip after the end of the war with Israel, a member of the Hamas politburo, Osama Hamdan, said on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Japanese NHK broadcaster that the United States would not allow a scenario in which the Hamas movement would rule the Gaza Strip after the end of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
"We say to [US] President Biden and his administration — stop having illusions about ruling in Gaza after the aggression. The resistance and our people will win, this is not up to dispute," Hamdan told a press conference in Beirut.
The United States should not "waste time on [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and his defeated army," the official said.

Netherlands to Supply Israel With F-35 Spare Parts Despite War Crime Risks - Reports
The Dutch government will continue to supply spare parts for Israel's F-35 fighter jets following the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, despite official warnings about possible violations of international humanitarian law, including war crimes, Dutch newspaper NRC reported, citing government sources.
Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot and Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Liesje Schreinemacher were reportedly informed in mid-October of the upcoming shipment of spare parts for the Israeli F-35s.
The ministry's lawyers warned that Israel could be violating the laws of war, as it has already used F-35s to bomb Gaza. But blocking the delivery could seriously damage relations with both Israel and the United States, NRC reported.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry told the newspaper that the export of goods to international partners in the F-35 program was "not restricted."

Netanyahu ‘Destroyed’ by Failure to Ensure Israel's Security, Ex-Prime Minister Believes
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been "destroyed emotionally" by his failure to ensure the country’s security and is miscalculating in his plan for Gaza, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Wednesday.
"[Netanyahu] has shrunk. He’s destroyed emotionally, that’s for sure. I mean, something terrible happened to him. Bibi [Netanyahu] has been working all his life on the false pretense that he is Mr. Security. He’s Mr. Bullshit ... Every minute he is prime minister he is a danger to Israel. I seriously mean it. I am certain the Americans understand he is in bad shape," Olmert told the Politico newspaper.
He also said that Netanyahu experienced a "nervous breakdown" fearing he would lose his post after the deadly Hamas attack on October 7.
Olmert believes that the incumbent Israeli prime minister is making a mistake by counting on establishing full control over the Gaza Strip for an "indefinite period."
"It’s not in Israel’s interests to oversee the security of Gaza. It is in our interests to be able to defend ourselves in a different way than we did before the October 7 attack. But to control Gaza again? No," the former Israeli leader said.
