WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Canada will suspend its participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) effective February 7, 2024, Global Affairs Canada said in a statement on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Russia formally withdrew from the treaty and the United Kingdom announced it was suspending participation in the accord and would work to implement voluntary stabilizing measures.

"Russia’s withdrawal of the CFE Treaty erodes the very basis on which it was built and creates an unacceptable imbalance in the European security framework. As a result, and in coordination with our allies, Canada today notified the Depository of the CFE Treaty that, in accordance with international law, we will suspend our operation of the CFE Treaty effective February 7, 2024," Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said in the statement.

Canada stands with its NATO allies in condemning Russia over its withdrawal, which is the culmination of that country’s disregard for its obligations under the CFE, the statement said.

Russia’s move is another example of its intention to undermine Euro-Atlantic security and the so-called rules-based international order, the statement said.
"Canada remains committed to effective conventional arms control, to ensuring Euro-Atlantic security," the statement added.
Russia suspended its participation in the CFE Treaty in 2007 in protest of NATO countries refusing to ratify the 1999 Adapted CFE Treaty. However, Russia did remain a party to the treaty.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier this year that Finland's NATO accession and Sweden's membership bid were "the last straw" that made Russia's exit from the treaty inevitable.
