MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Shiite armed groups in Iraq have launched drone attacks on the United States' Ain al-Asad military base in western Iraq and the al-Tanf base on the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border following US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Baghdad, Iraqi news agency Shafaq News reported on Monday, citing sources.
Two drones were launched to hit the Ain al-Asad military base in Al Anbar Governorate on Sunday night and on Monday morning, but both of them were intercepted by the armed forces, the sources told the news agency. Another unmanned aerial vehicle reportedly targeted the vicinity of the al-Tanf military base on Syrian territory, but was also shot down.
Blinken paid a visit to Baghdad on Sunday to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani. During his trip, the US Secretary of State said Washington was not seeking a conflict with Tehran, but it would do what is necessary to protect US personnel in the region from militias that it believes are allegedly backed by Iran.
