MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip. Israel retaliated by launching strikes and imposing a complete blockade on the Strip, home to over 2 million people, cutting off essential supplies.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Thursday expressed its concern over the risk of genocide in the Gaza Strip and called on all parties to prevent the catastrophe as soon as possible.
"We remain convinced that the Palestinian people are at grave risk of genocide. The time for action is now. Israel's allies also bear responsibility and must act now to prevent its disastrous course of action," the OHCHR said in a statement.
It also expressed "deepening horror" about Israel's airstrikes on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, describing Israel's actions as a "brazen violation of international law" and a "war crime."
The OHCHR welcomed "with hope" the Arab countries' resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict zone. It also urged the immediate release of all hostages taken by Hamas on October 7.
On Tuesday, the Israeli military said it had hit the Jabalia camp in the Gaza Strip, adding that the civilian deaths were a result of the "tragedy of war." The Gaza Interior Ministry said that at least 400 people had been killed or injured after Israeli air attacks against the refugee camp. On Wednesday, Israel launched another air attack against the camp, killing dozens more people, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
Since October 7, the escalation of the conflict has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 9,000 Gazans, mostly children and some 1,400 Israelis.

We conduct strikes only on targets that are used for terrorist purposes," Ukolova said.
Hamas still possess large missile potential and has an extensive munitions arsenal, she added.
