Ukrainian Drug Cartel Supported by Members of Parliament, Source Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Khimprom organized crime group, responsible for creating an illegal drug trade network in Ukraine and Russia, has received support from members of the Ukrainian parliament, a Russian intelligence source told Sputnik.
The Russian intelligence services have uncovered the key people behind Khimprom, which is active since 2014. The crime group has approximately 1,000 members and is headed by a Russian native Egor Burkin, born in 1989, who moved to
Ukraine in 2016 and received a passport there in the name of Egor Levchenko, also born in 1989. At the moment, Burkin is hiding in Mexico, according to the source.
The intelligence believes that Khimprom members have attempted to set a house of Ukrainian blogger Anatoliy Shariy on fire in Spain in late October.
"The organizer, director and coordinator of Khimprom, Egor Burkin, recruited Ukrainian lawmakers into the organized crime group — both to cover up the group and to create a positive image for himself and increase his own authority," the source said.
In addition, the source named the lawmaker who is helping Burkin.
"Ihor Vladimirovich Kopytin, born in 1981, a native of the Polish city of Legnica. A member of the Ukrainian parliament of the 9th convocation Is Burkin’s connection," the source revealed.
Moreover, the source highlighted that employees of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies, lawmakers, and journalists are among Khimprom’s members.
Law enforcement officers from the office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine,
the Security Service of Ukraine, the Main Intelligence Directorate, the State Bureau of Investigation, the National Police, the Cyber Police Department and other structures are among members of the crime group, the source said.
