Following the Tunisian revolution in 2011, the country faced attacks from various jihadist groups that resulted in the deaths of numerous police officers, foreign tourists, and civilians. In recent years, however, Tunisia has had some success in capturing or eliminating prominent jihadist militants.
Five jihadist prisoners convicted of killing two secular politicians and police officers managed to escape from a prison in Tunisia, marking a rare security breach for the North African nation, the country's Interior Ministry said in a press release on Tuesday.
The press release described the escapees as "dangerous" terrorists. In response, the Interior Ministry released the names and photos of the fugitives and urged citizens to contact police if they have any information about their whereabouts.
In addition, the ministry said it has informed all security agencies about the incident and called for intensifying searches, investigations and rapid inspections in order to arrest them as soon as possible.
"The Ministry of Interior announces that it has been informed by the administration of the Marnakiya Civil Prison of the escape of 05 dangerous elements serving sentences related to terrorist cases from the said prison at dawn today, Tuesday, October 31, 2023, and all security units have been alerted to the need to intensify the search, investigation and quick and sure inspection in order to arrest them as soon as possible," the ministry said.
Among the escaped convicts is Ahmed Malki, also known as "the Somali," who was serving a 24-year sentence for the 2013 assassinations of politicians Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi.

Another fugitive, Rayd Touati, was arrested in 2019 and recently sentenced to death by a Tunisian court. Touati is believed to have been involved in some of the most violent attacks to rock Tunisia in the past decade, including the 2014 killing of a police officer in the Chaambi mountains near the Algerian border.
It is important to note that, according to Western media, remnants of terrorist groups such as Daesh (ISIS) and al-Qaeda remain active in the mountainous regions near the Algerian border.
*Both al-Qaeda and Daesh are internationally recognized terrorist organizations and are banned in several countries, including Russia.
