As a probe in what was described as the deadliest shooting in the United States in 2023 is ongoing, Sputnik Africa compiled the latest updates on the tragic incident, which left at least 18 people dead, and 50 to 60 others injured:
The shootings took place at multiple locations in the town of Lewiston, Maine, on October 25;
Maine State Police named Robert Card 4/4/1983 "a person of interest" in the mass shooting, saying that he "should be considered armed and dangerous";
The "person of interest" remains at large, with "hundreds of police officers working around the state of Maine to investigate this case";
The person of interest has a history of military service and mental health issues, local media reported;
US President Joe Biden has been briefed in the incident and "will continue to receive updates," said the White House in a statement;
Maine State Police are taking the lead investigating the shooting, and the FBI is supporting local law enforcement forces;
The state of Maine has issued a "Shelter in Place" warning for citizens while an active shooter situation is under investigation;
Local public schools also announced via district superintendents offices that local area schools will be closed tomorrow, October 26, due to ongoing safety concerns;
The authorities are unable to provide an accurate number of victims of the mass shootings as the situation remains very fluid, Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck said.
