Russian Draft Resolution on Israeli-Palestinian War Not Adopted at UN Security Council
The Russian draft resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian war was not adopted at the UN Security Council given that it did not gain enough votes for it to be approved, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
Four countries voted in favor of the draft resolution, two countries voted against and nine countries abstained, the correspondent said on Wednesday.
Russia expressed disappointment over the UN Security Council's failure to adopt the resolution, which had raised hopes to bring about a ceasefire and prevent the expansion of the conflict.
"We regret the fact that the Security Council did not meet the hopes pinned upon it. We sought to do everything we could to help this," Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said.
The Russian ambassador said the challenge of preventing further escalation of the conflict now lies with the UN General Assembly and the efforts of Jordan.
"We support the draft resolution proposed by Jordan on behalf of the Arab group. Russia is one of its co-sponsors," Nebenzia added.
China affirmed its support for Russia's draft resolution prior to the vote and reiterated Beijing's steadfast commitment to peace.
