Russian athletes chalked up victories in prominent team competitions during the BRICS Games that took place in Durban, South Africa.
Despite the fierce competition, the Russian national team managed to take home 59 medals, among them 35 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze.
The Chinese team claimed the second spot on the podium, having won a total of 55 medals. Host country South Africa secured the bronze position, with a deserving count of 51 medals. India, on the other hand, finished with a commendable tally of 27 medals.

The Brazilian team, which was also invited, reportedly could not make it to the tournament for financial reasons.

The Russian team was composed of 34 athletes participating in six sports, including swimming, tennis, badminton, beach volleyball, table tennis, and sports for individuals with ODE injuries, specifically in the disciplines of table tennis and wheelchair tennis.
In 2016, BRICS initiated the organization of sports competitions with the BRICS Under-17 Football Tournament hosted by India. The following year, in Guangzhou, China, the second BRICS Games took place, featuring athletes competing in two disciplines: volleyball and wushu.

The third games were held in Johannesburg in 2018, and included competitions in volleyball (men and women) and women's football. Following that, there was a four-year hiatus, which was interrupted by China, which organized a cyber sports competition in 2022.

The role of the BRICS Games is to promote friendship and unity among BRICS member countries, Chairperson of the 2023 BRICS Games' Management Board, Sumayya Khan, told Sputnik Africa.
