Nuclear energy might well be the key to a future with enough electricity to supply every household on the planet. With many countries growing more interested in Africa's energy sector, AfroVerdict host sits down with a CEO and an activist to see how Africa can benefit from Russia's expertise and assistance in the development of this sector.
Rosatom, a Russian state company concerned with nuclear energy, nuclear technology and services, has a number of energy projects on the continent.
Ryan Collyer, CEO of Rosatom Central and Southern Africa, highlights the company's "flagship project" on the continent, which is "the 4800 megawatt nuclear power plant under construction in Egypt".
Among Rosatom's advantages, he underscores "human resource development", whereby "a large number of African students" are "studying on full bursaries in Russia".
Ryan explains that Rosatom finds a unique approach to the energy demand of every country it engages with and "tailor makes its solutions for its partners".
"We don't just offer a standard solution. We work with our partners, understand the peculiarities of a particular country, and really tailor the way that we work with them around that," he says.
Zambia is another country where Rosatom is constricting a "research reactor", "laboratories", a "nuclear medicine center" and "a multipurpose irradiation facility".
"Beyond just the the electricity, we are also able to offer our clients benefits in terms of nuclear medicine and multipurpose irradiation centers, which are able to irradiate foodstuffs and medical equipment and extend the shelf life dramatically," CEO Ryan Collyer explains.
Russia offers Africa a solution to its growing energy demand "that is not only economically viable, but also that is sustainable in the longer term, according to Princess Mthombeni, head and founder of Nuclear4Africa.
"It's something that is known globally that Russians are the powerhouse of this space of the nuclear space. They are one of the leaders in nuclear energy, in nuclear technology development," she says.
Mthombeni also mentioned waste to energy projects as another area where Russia's expertise could further contribute to Africa's sustainable development.
"We are not just talking only nuclear now, we are talking about other technologies that Russia is best at, which is the waste to energy plant that they can also build here. Those are projects that I can think are tangible and I can't wait for more projects that Russia can partner with us on," she explains.
