Russian-made floating nuclear power plants can help provide stable and safe electricity to the African continent given its vast and diverse coastline, said the First Deputy General Director and Director of the Development and International Business Unit of the Rosatom corporation, Kirill Komarov.Rosatom representatives took part in the session "Powering Africa's Future: Collaborative Energy Solutions" at the African Energy Week forum in Cape Town, South Africa. Rosatom specialists commented on the advantages of developing nuclear generation in various formats, including high-capacity nuclear power plants, small modular reactors, and floating nuclear power plants.Earlier, Rosatom proposed to create a nuclear power fleet to supply African countries with electricity, Alexey Likhachev, the state corporation's director general, told journalists on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa forum held in St. Petersburg at the end of July. This option minimizes the costs of a particular country for the creation of nuclear infrastructure, Likhachev explained.Rosatom is the Russian state nuclear corporation, which is involved in all stages of the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining to decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The firm's first floating nuclear power plant started operating in 2019.

17:47 18.10.2023 (Updated: 18:39 18.10.2023) Floating nuclear power plants designed by Rosatom, the Russian state-owned nuclear energy corporation, started operating in 2019. During the Russia-Africa Summit in July, the company signed intergovernmental agreements with some African countries on cooperation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Russian-made floating nuclear power plants can help provide stable and safe electricity to the African continent given its vast and diverse coastline, said the First Deputy General Director and Director of the Development and International Business Unit of the Rosatom corporation, Kirill Komarov.
"We have been operating a floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) in Russia since 2019 and we are confident that this technological solution can be the answer to Africa's needs for stable and safe electricity, taking into account the geographical specifics of the region: Africa has a vast and diverse coastline that stretches along the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans," Komarov said, as quoted by Rosatom.
