MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Since the outbreak of the latest Palestinian-Israeli conflict on October 7, both the Palestinian and Israeli sides have reported thousands of deaths and thousands of injuries as a result of the ongoing escalation.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Tuesday it had eliminated four people who attempted to cross the fence on the border with Lebanon and plant an explosive device.
"A short while ago, IDF observation troops spotted a terrorist squad attempting to infiltrate the security fence with Lebanon and plant a explosive device. Four terrorists were killed," the IDF said on Telegram.
Tensions have been on the rise along the Israeli-Lebanese border since Palestinian group Hamas attacked Israel in early October. The Israeli army has repeatedly shelled the border area in the past days, killing a journalist and wounding six others last Friday.
On Monday, the Lebanese movement Hezbollah said that it carried out strikes on five Israeli army posts along the Israeli-Lebanese border, while the IDF said it returned the fire.

Congressman McCaul Says Does Not Want Deployed US Marines to Enter Israel-Hamas War
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The decision by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to send US Marines off the coast of the Gaza Strip and Israel to act as a deterrent is a sound one, but the United States does not want to see them join the Israel-Hamas war, US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said on Tuesday.
"Secretary Austin now has 2,000 Marines Expeditionary Force off the coast of Gaza and Israel, I'd say northern Israel near Hezbollah, as a deterrent to ensure it does not invade Israel," McCaul said in a statement.
McCaul said he agrees with the decision and is "glad" Austin deployed aircraft carrier strike groups there complete with the Marine detachment, but emphasized that he is against the Marines getting involved directly in the war.
"[T]he expeditionary force of Marines is very telling because that would be a kinetic force that if they land on the ground, they're boots on the ground going to war. And we don't want that to happen," McCaul said.

Jordan, Egypt Unable to Accept Refugees From Gaza Strip
DOHA (Sputnik) - Neither Jordan, nor Egypt will be able to take in Palestinian refugees from the Gaza Strip, whom Israel is trying to forcibly relocate from the enclave, Jordanian King Abdullah bin Al Hussein said on Tuesday.
"I speak out forcefully not just on behalf of Jordan, but also on behalf of our brothers in Egypt: neither Jordan, nor Egypt will be able to take in refugees. The situation has a range of humanitarian aspects which have to be decided on Palestinian territories in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank. It is impossible to try to force a situation concerning Palestinians' future on other countries," the king was quoted as saying by the PETRA news agency after his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Some parties are trying to create a new reality on the ground, the king noted.
"We all realize that the situation is serious and how we are going to cooperate to ease the escalation and halt violence, and we have to think about what happens next. The violence must stop, we cannot go on with the same circle of violence each year," he said.
It is important to find "a political horizon enabling Palestinians and Israelis to cooperate," the king added.
He warned that the consequences of the conflict would be terrible for the whole world.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Egypt does not want to accept a large number of refugees from the Gaza Strip and has threatened the West to send them to European countries in response to its pressure, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
Egypt agreed to deliver aid into Gaza, but it fears that the longer the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues, the more actively Western countries will press on Cairo to allow millions of refugees into the Sinai Peninsula, the newspaper reported.
"You want us to take 1 million people? Well, I am going to send them to Europe. You care about human rights so much — well you take them," the newspaper quoted a senior Egyptian official as telling a European counterpart.
The European official told the news outlet that Egypt was "really, really angry" about the pressure on it to take in refugees.

Hamas Condemns States Voting Against Russian Draft Resolution in UN Security Council
CAIRO (Sputnik) - Palestinian group Hamas on Tuesday condemned the countries that voted to reject a Russia-proposed draft resolution in the UN Security Council to resolve the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
"We, as the Hamas movement, express disapproval and condemn the stances of the countries that voted against the Russian draft resolution in the UN Security Council … We stress that these positions give the 'green light' to the Zionist occupation [Israel] to commit more crimes and escalate the genocidal war it is waging against more than two million Palestinian citizens," Hamas said in a statement.
On Monday, the UN Security Council rejected a Russian draft humanitarian resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone. The draft strongly condemned violence and hostilities against civilians, as well as "all acts of terrorism." The document also called for the safe release of all hostages, as well as for the unimpeded delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid and the creation of conditions for the evacuation of civilians.

Israeli Ground Offensive on Gaza Likely to Begin After Biden's Solidarity Trip - Reports
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Israeli army is likely to move out against the besieged Gaza Strip after US President Joe Biden wraps up his trip to Israel as he seeks to signal the US's solidarity with the Jewish state, media reported Tuesday.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv this week that President Biden would come to the country on Wednesday to reaffirm his "ironclad commitment" to Israel's security.
It is extremely unlikely that Israel wants the American president to face the reality of a ground attack during his visit, German magazine Der Spiegel reported. Evidence is mounting that the anticipated offensive will get a go-ahead only once Biden leaves the country, it reported.
