MOSCOW (Sputnik) - RMS Titanic planned an expedition to the Titanic in 2024 to retrieve equipment from the radio room, primarily the Marconi transmitter from which communicators sent distress signals after the passenger liner collided with an iceberg.
RMS Titanic, the firm that owns the salvage rights to the Titanic shipwreck, has canceled its upcoming mission to search for artifacts from the ship after the death of French maritime expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was supposed to lead the expedition, aboard the Titan submersible near the Titanic wreck site, the US media reported on Saturday, citing court filings.
"Out of respect for P.H. Nargeolet and his family, and the other four people who perished so recently at the site, and their families, the company has decided that artifact recovery would not be appropriate at this time," RMS Titanic was quoted as saying in a document filed with a US District Court.
RMS Titanic added it would not send crewed submersibles to the site until further investigation into the circumstances of the Titan's sinking. However, the company will continue to take pictures of the Titanic wreck and conduct research, RMS Titanic said.

On June 18, the Titan submersible imploded during an expedition to the Titanic wreckage, killing the five people who were on board, including Nargeolet. The submersible's debris was later found on the ocean floor near the Titanic wreck site.
