Russia to Continue Grain Supplies to African Countries in Need Next Year: Lavrov

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Moscow. A joint press conference followed the discussions.
Russia will continue to supply grain to African countries in need next year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.
"[Moscow announced earlier this year] the decision to send a solid batch of grain free of charge as our humanitarian aid to six African countries that are on the list of the World Food Program. By the end of the year, these deliveries will be fulfilled, and we will continue our humanitarian activity in this area next year," Lavrov told reporters after a meeting with League of Arab States (LAS) Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
In July, the Turkey- and UN-mediated Black Sea Grain Initiative, which provided for a humanitarian corridor to allow safe exports of Russian and
Ukrainian agricultural
goods, expired after Russia refused to continue its participation, citing persistent violation of the package deal's component to facilitate Russian grain and fertilizer exports.
The termination of the Black Sea Initiative was due to the fact that the
Russian part of it was not implemented at all and had no impact on the food security of developing countries, the minister added.
On Israel-Palestine Conflict Escalation
Russia and the League of Arab States (LAS) agree that violence against Israeli and Palestinian civilians, including hostage-taking, is unacceptable, Lavrov expressed.
"We summed up our position on the unacceptability of any violence, the unacceptability of causing damage and death to civilians in whatever country they are in, the unacceptability of taking women and children hostage," Lavrov mentioned.
Lavrov also said that Russia is ready to evacuate its citizens from the
conflict region.
Moreover, he commented that the
United States is trying to monopolize all mediation efforts in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
"Instead of working closely with the League of Arab States, the Americans are trying to monopolize mediation efforts and divert the dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis away from a political settlement, away from the creation of a Palestinian state and to replace the implementation of UN Security Council decisions with talk of alleviating the socio-economic problems of the Palestinian population, about establishing some kind of ongoing contacts between Palestinians and Israelis to ensure daily security on the ground," Lavrov told reporters.
The LAS head said, in turn, that the current escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a result of the parties' failure to implement resolutions by the UN Security Council.
In addition, the Russian Foreign Minister commented on possible initiatives for the peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"As you expressed about the existence of many initiatives to resolve the situation in the Middle East, I honestly do not know about initiatives. There are calls to immediately stop the bloodshed and sit down at the negotiating table, but there can be only one initiative — the decisions on the settlement of the Palestinian problem that were adopted in the United Nations organization," he said.
On Saturday morning, Israel was hit by an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army said the Hamas had fired over 3,000 rockets, adding that dozens of Hamas troops had infiltrated border areas in southern Israel.
Since then, the Israeli military has sent troops to the southern territories to recapture them from the Palestinian forces and has started conducting strikes against Hamas' positions in Gaza. Moreover, the Israeli government announced that it had invoked Article 40 of the Basic Law, which means the country is officially in a state of
war.
