The Nigerian government is "deeply concerned" about the recent hostilities that began between Israel and Hamas on Saturday, October 7, and calls for a cessation of all military activities and a de-escalation of tensions, said Yusuf M. Tuggar, the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs. He stated that the cycle of violence and retaliation of the current escalation only exacerbates an "unending cycle" of anguish and agony for the civilian population that bears the burden of each conflict. The minister emphasized Nigeria's advocacy for a peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue.Similarly, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has urged for the cessation of the fighting, which has already resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives on both sides. He asked the conflict parties to terminate military hostilities and return, unconditionally, to the negotiating table to actualize the concept of two states coexisting peacefully in order to protect the interest of both the Israeli and Palestinian populations. The statement issued by the chairperson asserts that the permanent Israeli-Palestinian tension is primarily caused by "the denial of fundamental rights to the Palestinian people, including their right to an independent and sovereign state."Israel experienced an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning. According to the Israeli army, Hamas fired over 3,000 rockets and dozens of Hamas troops infiltrated border areas in southern Israel. In response, the Israeli military deployed troops to the southern territories to regain control from the Palestinian forces and began conducting strikes on Hamas' positions in Gaza.On Sunday, the Israeli authorities have approved the declaration of a "state of war," which also signifies the commencement of significant military operations. Against this backdrop, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem told Sputnik that a ceasefire with Israel was no longer possible due to Israel's escalation of the conflict. He further added that negotiations for the release of Israeli hostages would occur only after the conclusion of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.According to Israeli media, at least 659 Israelis have been killed and over 2,156 injured due to the recent escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Meanwhile, earlier, the Palestinian Health Ministry said that Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip have resulted in over 370 fatalities and nearly 2,200 injuries.

Nigeria, African Union Call for De-Escalation of Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
19:12 08.10.2023 (Updated: 16:52 09.10.2023) Hamas launched a significant attack early on Saturday against Israel, firing several rockets and breaching Gaza's security barrier as part of its Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. In response, the Israeli military deployed troops to the southern territories to retake them from Palestinian forces and conducted strikes on Hamas' positions in Gaza.
The minister emphasized Nigeria's advocacy for a peaceful
conflict resolution through dialogue.
"The Federal Government of Nigeria, therefore, calls on both sides to exercise restraint, prioritize the safety of civilians and give room for humanitarian considerations," he said in a statement.
Similarly, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has urged for the cessation of the fighting, which has already resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives on both sides. He asked the conflict parties to terminate military hostilities and return, unconditionally, to the negotiating table to actualize the concept of two states coexisting peacefully in order to protect the interest of both the Israeli and Palestinian populations.
"The Chairperson further calls on the international community, and the major world powers in particular, to assume their responsibilities to impose peace and guarantee the rights of the two peoples," read the statement.
The statement issued by the chairperson asserts that the permanent Israeli-Palestinian tension is primarily caused by "the denial of fundamental rights to the
Palestinian people, including their right to an independent and sovereign state."
Israel experienced an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning. According to the Israeli army, Hamas fired over 3,000 rockets and dozens of Hamas troops infiltrated border areas in southern Israel. In response, the Israeli military
deployed troops to the southern territories to regain control from the Palestinian forces and began conducting strikes on Hamas' positions in Gaza.
On Sunday, the Israeli authorities have approved the declaration of a "state of war," which also signifies the commencement of significant military operations. Against this backdrop, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem
told Sputnik that a ceasefire with Israel was no longer possible due to Israel's escalation of the conflict. He further added that negotiations for the release of Israeli hostages would occur only after the conclusion of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
According to Israeli media, at least 659 Israelis have been killed and over 2,156 injured due to the recent escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Meanwhile, earlier, the Palestinian Health Ministry said that Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip have resulted in over 370
fatalities and nearly 2,200 injuries.
