MOSCOW (Sputnik) - After Hamas militants' attack on Israel Saturday, the country's military has sent troops into the southern territories to retake them from Palestinian forces and has begun carrying out airstrikes on Hamas' positions in Gaza.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is prepared for the situation when violence spreads to other areas, including to the West Bank or Israel's northern border with Lebanon, IDF spokesman Richard Hecht said on Sunday.
"It’s early days, we’re at the beginning, the beginning of this. It’s hard to say. I mean, we're ready for the convergence of arenas. That’s something we're ready for," Hecht said in an interview with CNN.

The Israeli army said Hamas had fired more than 3,000 rockets, adding that dozens of Hamas troops had infiltrated border areas in southern Israel. The Israeli military has since sent troops into the southern territories to retake them from Palestinian forces and has begun carrying out airstrikes on Hamas' positions in Gaza.
