SOCHI, Russia (Sputnik) - Algeria has formally applied to join the BRICS group of largest emerging economies and become a shareholder in BRICS' New Development Bank with a $1.5 billion contribution.
The possibility of Algeria joining BRICS should be worked out collegially and calmly, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

"Algeria is our friend certainly, a traditional friend in the Arab world, in the north of Africa. We think that it would befit the organization, but we obviously have to work out these issues with all our friends within BRICS, in contact with the Algerian leadership. We should do this calmly, not creating problems for the organization, but only creating new ways for overall development," the leader said at the Valdai forum in the Russian city of Sochi.
