South Sudan's President Salva Kiir conducted an official visit to Moscow on September 27-28 to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. After the meeting, the South Sudanese foreign minister elaborated on some of the topics covered by the leaders during the "historical" visit in an exclusive interview with Sputnik Africa.
During the interview, South Sudan's Foreign Minister James Pitia Morgan discussed a range of topics, including bilateral cooperation with Russia in areas of mutual interest, regional concerns such as security and economy, as well as key issues on the international agenda.
First of all, the minister praised the president's first visit to Moscow, stressing that the meeting with the Russian leader was "very successful." According to the top diplomat, South Sudan, as a new nation that wants to "be a part of the international community," is open to cooperation with those countries that are willing to provide help and promote peace in the region.
In this regard, he noted, South Sudan "appreciated" Russia's readiness to help ensure security in the country. In particular, he revealed that Kiir asked Putin to provide humanitarian assistance to alleviate South Sudan's refugee crisis, which arose from the conflict in neighboring Sudan.
Furthermore, Morgan elaborated on the economic partnership between the two countries, highlighting that South Sudan has invited Russian companies to augment their collaboration in different fields such as minerals and oil exploration, hydroelectricity, and industrialization.
