A massive blaze erupted early Monday at the police headquarters in Ismailia, northeastern Egypt. Social media videos depicted the city's security directorate completely engulfed in flames. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at present.
The fire that broke out at the police facility in the city of Ismailia has been successfully contained after a few hours, according to local media.
The fire was brought under control after multiple fire trucks rushed to the scene. As a precautionary measure, authorities removed all highly flammable materials from the building. Reports indicate that people, including prisoners, were evacuated immediately after the fire broke out.
The country's Ministry of Health and Population stated that the incident caused injuries to at least 38 people, with 12 receiving first aid at the site, and the remaining 26 being transferred to the Ismailia Medical Complex.
According to the official spokesperson for the ministry Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, 24 cases of suffocation and two burn cases were reported so far. It was noted that seven people have been discharged after receiving medical treatment.
The ministry stated that a total of 50 ambulances were dispatched to the scene "immediately upon receiving reports of the fire" to transport victims to the hospital.

The Health Ministry is "raising the state of readiness in Ismailia hospitals to receive any injured people as a result of the fire accident that broke out this morning [...]. All emergency medications and blood groups are available in the governorate's hospitals," the statement read.

Following the incident, Mahmoud Tawfik, Egypt's Minister of Interior, arrived at the Ismailia Security Directorate. He inspected the site and instructed that all necessary assistance be provided to the injured until they fully recover.
The minister also formed a committee of consultants to investigate the cause of the fire and evaluate the structural safety of the building for prompt restoration. Local media reported that sections of the structure had fallen during the blaze.
