Ukraine launched its latest counteroffensive in early June. Three months later, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Ukrainian counteroffensive had failed, with Ukraine suffering 71,000 casualties. Several Western officials also admitted that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had not been successful.
The Russian armed forces destroyed over 17,000 Ukrainian military, over 2,700 pieces of weapons and equipment in September, Russian Defense Minister Shoigu said on Tuesday.
"Over the current month, over 17,000 people, more than 2,700 pieces of weapons and military equipment have been destroyed, including seven US Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, 77 American M777 artillery systems, 51 self-propelled artillery units from Germany, France, Poland and the United States, and also two German Leopard tanks and one UK Challenger tank," Shoigu told a board meeting.
The Ukrainian armed forces are suffering serious losses along the entire line of the combat contact as a result of effective fire damage, the minister added.
He went on to say that in the context of the West's supply of weapons to Kiev, the Russian Armed Forces are increasing their combat capabilities, including through improved training. The combat potential of the Russian Airborne Forces will increase by 1.3 times by the end of this year, and fire capabilities will increase by 20%, the minister added.
Shoigu emphasized that the US and its allies continue to provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with weapons, while Kiev throws untrained soldiers into meaningless assaults, despite the lack of results of the counteroffensive.
"Under these conditions, we continue to increase the combat power of the armed forces, including by supplying modern weapons and improving the training of troops, taking into account the experience from the special military operation," he said.
Despite the failure of the counteroffensive, he stressed, Kiev's Western allies are not deviating from their "inhuman principle" of using weapons to ensure peace. According to Shoigu, such "cynical actions" of the West only push Ukraine towards self-destruction.
The minister also touched upon the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, stating that the troops of Russia's Eastern Military District are increasing combat training activities to protect Russia’s national interests against the backdrop of Washington’s course towards the development of military blocs in the area.
"The United States and its allies are taking ever new steps to contain Russia and China in the international arena. To strengthen its influence in the Asia-Pacific region, Washington has headed for the development of military blocs such as AUKUS and Quad. To ensure constant readiness to protect national interests, troops of the Eastern Military District are increasing operational and combat training activities," Shoigu said.
According to Shoigu, in June, an operational exercise of the Pacific Fleet was held with the participation of more than 60 ships and support vessels, while in July the Northern Interaction 2023 exercise was held jointly with China. He added that this Monday the Finval-2023 exercise was completed under the leadership of Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Nikolay Evmenov.
