MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Russian Interior Ministry announced on Monday that it had put the president of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is seeking the arrest of President Vladimir Putin, on the wanted list.
According to the ministry, Piotr Hofmanski, President of ICC, was put on the wanted list under an article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
"Grounds for the search: wanted under the article of the criminal code," the ministry's website said.
On March 17, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's children's rights commissioner, accusing them of illegally deporting Ukrainian children. Russia insists that it did in fact evacuate the children from the combat zones.
Moscow does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and has declared the court's decision null and void.
In light of the arrest warrant, Putin decided not to attend the BRICS summit in Johannesburg as South Africa is a party to the ICC. The Russian delegation to the Johannesburg gathering was led by Russia's top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov, while Putin participated in the event online.
