MOSCOW (Sputnik) – BRICS is a group of world economies that is seen as a counterweight to Western economic domination. It derives its name from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In August, six nations – Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the Saudi Arabia and UAE had been invited to join the bloc.
Foreign ministers of the BRICS countries will hold a meeting on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 20, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"On September 20, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in a meeting of the heads of foreign policy departments of the BRICS countries 'on the sidelines' of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the United States," the ministry said in a statement.

The top diplomats will exchange views on current global issues, including the agenda of the UN General Assembly's session, the statement read. The ministers will also discuss interaction within the BRICS format, including opportunities for strengthening coordination at leading multilateral platforms and the implementation of decisions made at the group's 15th summit in the South African city of Johannesburg from August 22-24.
"Lavrov will inform his colleagues about plans for Russia's upcoming presidency of the association in 2024," the ministry added.
The high-level week of the UNGA session will take place at the UN headquarters from September 18-26. The Russian delegation will be headed by Lavrov. He is expected to address the gathering on September 23.
