WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Overall, the United States is withholding $85 million in assistance to Cairo unless the Egyptian government releases political prisoners. The withheld funds are only a small portion of the $1.3 billion in military aid the United States provides Egypt annually.
The Biden administration is redirecting $55 million in military aid initially meant for Egypt to Taiwan because of US concerns over Cairo's human rights record, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.
