UAE Lifts Visa Ban on Nigeria, Resumes Flights as Tinubu Visits Abu Dhabi
14:33 12.09.2023 (Updated: 15:29 12.09.2023) Last November, the United Arab Emirates immigration authorities forbade citizens of 20 African countries, including Nigeria, to enter its capital Dubai, decreeing that all submitted applications would be rejected and fees were non-refundable.
The United Arab Emirates has lifted a year-long visa ban imposed on Nigerian travelers after the country's President Bola Tinubu met the UAE President, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Nigerian presidency announced in a
statement.
"On Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, finalized a historic agreement in Abu Dhabi, which has resulted in the immediate cessation of the visa ban placed on Nigerian travelers," the office said.
Furthermore, under the agreement, Etihad Airlines and
Emirates Airlines will resume flight schedules into and out of Nigeria, "without any more delay."
"As negotiated between the two heads of state, this immediate restoration of flight activity, through these two airlines and between the two countries, does not involve any immediate payment by the Nigerian government," the presidency explained.
Flights between both countries were stopped last year after Dubai’s Emirates airline suspended operations in Nigeria, citing inability to repatriate funds from the West African country.
Tinubu's office also revealed that the governments have set up a new framework that envisages new investments by the UAE in the Nigerian economy to the tune of several billion dollars in various sectors.
Tinubu's visit came shortly after his return from the
G20 Summit in India, where he, as noted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, secured up to $14 billion in investment pledges in the defense, power, and steel sectors of Nigeria's economy.
