Aftermath of Morocco's Strongest Earthquake in 20 Years

Morocco was rocked by a rare and powerful earthquake on Friday night, which killed more than 1,000 people and injured more than 1,200. The quake, which had a magnitude of 6.9, was the most powerful among the instrumentally recorded ones in Morocco's modern history.
Friday night's earthquake caused widespread damage and destruction in central Morocco, especially in rural areas, where many buildings were poorly constructed and vulnerable to shaking.
The epicenter was located near the town of Ighil in the High Atlas mountains, about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a popular tourist destination. The earthquake occurred as a result of shallow oblique-thrust faulting beneath the mountain range, which means that the ground moved both horizontally and vertically along a fault plane.
The earthquake was reportedly felt in Spain, Portugal, and Algeria as well as Mali. Many people reported hearing loud noises and feeling strong vibrations before the quake struck. Some witnesses said they saw flashes of light in the sky, which could be explained by the phenomenon of earthquake lights.
