Burkina Faso’s armed forces have arrived in Niger for counterterrorism training, media reported on Friday citing a military source in the country. On July 26, a coup d'etat took place in Niger. President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted and detained by his own guard, led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani. Following the coup, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) suspended all cooperation with Niger and threatened invasion if the putschists do not reinstate Bazoum. ECOWAS member states Mali and Burkina Faso opposed the invasion plan and pledged their support to Niger. In August, Niger authorized Mali and Burkina Faso’s armed forces to intervene on its territory in the event of military aggression against the country.
