EU Development Ministers to Discuss Niger, Palestine at Informal Meeting, Borrell Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - EU development ministers' meeting in the Spanish port city of Cadiz on Tuesday will look at the dire situation faced by Nigeriens and Palestinians, top EU diplomat Josep Borrell told reporters.
The ministerial meeting will focus on digital, climate and social transformation but, with Spain being so close to Africa geographically, the situation in Niger remains a concern for the Spanish presidency of the EU, Borrell said.
"It's a good occasion to talk about what's happening in Niger and what the prospects are," the top EU diplomat said in a doorstep interview ahead of the meeting.
He reiterated EU support for deposed Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum and Western Africa's bloc ECOWAS, which adopted an intervention plan last month. The European Union threatened Nigerien coup leaders
with sanctions after they declined to reinstate Bazoum.
"Another issue that some member states want to put on the table is the situation in the Palestinian territories, which is becoming worse and worse. The dire situation in Palestine will be for sure one of the next subjects for the Belgian presidency," Borrell added.
Israeli soldiers continued clashing with Palestinians in the Israel-occupied West Bank last week, almost a month after the Jewish state launched an unprecedented military operation at a refugee camp in the Palestinian territory in a bid to rout Palestinian militancy.
