Earlier in the day, Nguema sworn in as the president of Gabon during a transitional period after the military seized power in the country, as broadcast by the Gabon 24 channel. The ceremony was held at the presidential palace in the capital of Gabon, Libreville.
Gabon's rebel-appointed leader, Gen. Brice Oligie Nguema, proposed on Monday to adopt a new constitution for the country at a referendum.
"Dear citizens, the constitution is the text that defines the state. It is dedicated to state institutions, procedures. Since its mechanisms can no longer ensure our security, it is very important that Gabonese from all walks of life agree to adopt a new constitution by voting in a referendum," Nguema said during the swearing-in ceremony, as broadcast by Gabon 24.
High-ranking military and officials gathered in the hall, where the general took the oath.
The military authorities of Gabon intend to transfer power to civilians through new elections at the end of the transition period, Nguema added.
"After this transitional period, with the help of all Gabonese development partners, we expect to hand over power to the civilians by organizing new elections that are free, transparent and credible," the transitional president said.
Nguema promised to respect the republican regime in the country.
"I swear before God and the people of Gabon to preserve the republican regime, respect and abide by the Transitional Charter and the law," he stated.
In addition, the new head of state promised to preserve the values of democracy, the independence of the homeland, the integrity of the territory of Gabon and the national unity of the country.
Apart from that, Nguema said that a new government will be formed in the coming days, and it will be made up of experienced people.
"The government will be formed in a few days and will consist of experienced people with recognized skills," Nguema said.
The new government will be tasked with working out a mechanism for the return of political refugees to Gabon and amnesty for those arrested for expressing their views.
