On 3 September Russia marks the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism. The date is linked to the tragic events of 19 years ago, when a terrorist attack on a school in the Russian Republic of North Ossetia-Alania left 334 people dead, among them 186 children.
On 1 September 2004, terrorists attacked School No 1 in Beslan (in the south-west of North Ossetia) while pupils were gathered for a solemn assembly.
More than 1,000 people were present at the ceremony, all of whom were forced inside the school by the militants and held for almost three days. On 3 September, the building was stormed, leaving dozens of members of the Russian special forces and nearly 200 schoolchildren dead.
