Mozambique's army has killed the alleged leader of a Daesh*-linked insurgency concentrated in the northern Cabo Delgado province, the country's Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday.According to Joaquim Mangrasse, Chief of Staff of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM), Bonomade Machude Omar, also known as Abu Sulayfa Muhammad and Ibn Omar, who had led the insurgents since the start of the conflict in 2017, was killed along with two other senior members. It was noted that Omar and two associates of the Daesh-affiliated group were killed in a forest in Macomia in an operation carried out with the army's foreign allies. In October 2017, Ibn Omar participated in the first attacks against police facilities in Mocimboa da Praia, a port town in northern Mozambique. In 2020, he was part of the terrorist group that seized Mocimboa da Praia, and the following year he led the attack on the city of Palma, which forced the French oil and gas company TotalEnergies to suspend its liquefied natural gas project.Mangrasse emphasized that "terrorism is not over," warning that jihadists currently operate in small and dispersed groups.Separately, the country's President Filipe Nyusi said during a news conference in Maputo that the "leader of the terrorists" in Mozambique had been killed on Tuesday. At the same time, the president also noted that the fight against the insurgency continues. Earlier this week, Mozambique's Defense Ministry announced that it had killed two senior rebel leaders in Cabo Delgado, including Abu Kital, "who held the position of deputy operations commander for the Al Sunna Wall Jamat terrorist group," and Ali Mahando. Rich in natural gas, the Muslim-majority province of Cabo Delgado has been gripped for over five years by an insurgency led by Daesh-linked fighters. Since 2017, the insurgency has claimed thousands of lives and led to disruption of multi-billion dollar energy projects in the province. According to UN estimates, more than one million people have been displaced by violence in northern Mozambique.Last month, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) extended its Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) for 12 months. The regional bloc cited the improvement in security and reduction in terrorist activity in Cabo Delgado as a result of SAMIM's deployment. The mission was deployed in July 2021 to support the government's fight against terrorism.*Daesh (also known as ISIS/ISIL/IS) is a terrorist group banned in Russia and many other countries

Mozambique's Armed Forces Kill Top Terrorist Leader: Defense Ministry
Since 2017, jihadists have been attempting to establish an Islamic state in Mozambique's northern province of Cabo Delgado. Civilians have been the main target of terrorist attacks. Last month, the military launched a major offensive against the Islamists with the support of hundreds of soldiers from several southern African countries.
Mozambique's army has killed the alleged leader of a Daesh*-linked insurgency concentrated in the northern Cabo Delgado province, the country's Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
According to Joaquim Mangrasse, Chief of Staff of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM), Bonomade Machude Omar, also known as Abu Sulayfa Muhammad and Ibn Omar, who had led the insurgents since the start of the conflict in 2017, was killed along with two other senior members.
"From the investigation carried out, we have verified, with factual evidence, that the main leader who has directed operations since the outbreak of terrorism in Mozambique, named as Bonomade Machude, also as Ibn Omar, and as Abu Suraka, has been killed," Mangrasse said.
It was noted that Omar and two associates of the Daesh-affiliated group were killed in a forest in Macomia in an
operation carried out with the army's foreign allies.
In October 2017, Ibn Omar participated in the first attacks against police facilities in Mocimboa da Praia, a port town in northern Mozambique. In 2020, he was part of the terrorist group that seized Mocimboa da Praia, and the following year he led the attack on the city of Palma, which forced the French oil and gas company TotalEnergies to suspend its liquefied
natural gas project.
Mangrasse emphasized that "terrorism is not over," warning that jihadists currently operate in small and dispersed groups.
"However, we reaffirm that the enemy has been dislodged from all district headquarters that were once occupied. Operations are continuing in coordination with our partners," added Mangrasse, referring to contingents from the Rwandan armed forces and the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).
Separately, the country's President Filipe Nyusi said during a news conference in Maputo that the "leader of the terrorists" in Mozambique had been killed on Tuesday. At the same time, the president also noted that the fight against the insurgency continues.
"So it means that persecution prevails and continues right up to where the terrorists operate, in small groups," Nyusi said.
Earlier this week, Mozambique's Defense Ministry announced that it had killed two senior rebel leaders in Cabo Delgado, including Abu Kital, "who held the position of deputy operations commander for the Al Sunna Wall Jamat terrorist group," and Ali Mahando.
