Libyan authorities have arrested a Daesh (also known as ISIS)* extremist group leader suspected of having planned three deadly attacks in the capital Tripoli in 2018, the head of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh has said.The prime minister added that the mission was conducted by the state-backed Radaa (Deterrence) Force and the Rahbat al-Dourou (Shields) Brigade from Tajoura, east of Tripoli.Dbeibeh also reiterated his government's dedication to fighting terrorism and prosecuting all those involved in terrorist acts.In September of that year, another suicide attack claimed by Daesh targeted the Tripoli-based headquarters of the Libyan National Oil Company. Two people were killed in the attack, while ten company staff were injured.In December 2018, Daesh launched another assault: suicide bombers broke into the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry in the capital and blew themselves up, killing three people and wounding 21. One senior diplomat was among the victims.Daesh cells are still carrying out sporadic attacks in the country as authorities work to eliminate remnants of the group. In May, a court in the northwestern city of Misrata sentenced 23 Daesh members for killing dozens of people, including the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians in Sirte in 2015. 11:49 26.08.2023 (Updated: 12:55 26.08.2023) Since the overthrow and assassination of Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 during an armed conflict and the ensuing political crisis, jihadists have taken the opportunity to gain a foothold in the North African country.
Libyan authorities have arrested a Daesh (also known as ISIS)* extremist group leader suspected of having planned three deadly attacks in the capital Tripoli in 2018, the head of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh has said.
"Our forces apprehended a leader of the terrorist organization Daesh [IS], involved in the planning and command of terrorist acts that targeted the institutions of our country and their fallen officials," Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh said during a live TV broadcast.
The prime minister added that the mission was conducted by the state-backed Radaa (Deterrence) Force and the Rahbat al-Dourou (Shields) Brigade from Tajoura, east of Tripoli.
Dbeibeh also reiterated his government's dedication to
fighting terrorism and prosecuting all those involved in terrorist acts.
On May 2, 2018, Daesh claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on the headquarters of the Libyan High Electoral Commission in Tripoli that killed 14 people.
In September of that year, another suicide attack claimed by Daesh targeted the Tripoli-based headquarters of the
Libyan National Oil Company. Two people were killed in the attack, while ten company staff were injured.
