Algeria, Nigeria Agree to Coordinate Efforts on Resolving Nigerien Crisis, Algiers Says
CAIRO (Sputnik) - Last week, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs Abdel-Fatau Musah said the chiefs of staff of ECOWAS, of which Niger is a member, had agreed on the date for the launch of a possible military invasion of the West African state to reinstate ousted Nigerien leader Mohamed Bazoum, but would not make it public.
Algeria and Nigeria have agreed on the need to coordinate efforts on finding a political and peaceful solution to the current
crisis in Niger, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said on Thursday.
"First of all, an agreement has been reached on the need to coordinate the efforts of the two countries in order to strengthen international and regional momentum on a political and peaceful solution to the current crisis in Niger," Attaf said in a statement released by the ministry.
On Wednesday, the Algerian Foreign Ministry said that Attaf would visit three countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) — Nigeria, Benin and Ghana — to discuss the
situation in Niger.
A coup in Niger took place on July 26. President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted and detained by his own guard, led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani. Most Western countries as well as ECOWAS condemned it. In early August, ECOWAS adopted a plan for a potential military intervention in Niger.
