MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The South African city of Johannesburg is witnessing the conclusion of the 15th BRICS Summit, which is being held in an expanded format with the participation of tens of countries interested in joining the bloc of emerging economies. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also attended the high-level summit.
Multipolarity is not enough to guarantee a peaceful global community, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday at the BRICS-Africa outreach and BRICS Plus dialogue meeting.

"We are moving towards a multipolar world and that is a positive thing, but multipolarity in itself in not enough to guarantee a peaceful or just global community. To be a factor of peace, equity and justice in international relations, multipolarity must be supported by strong and effective multilateral institutions," Guterres said.

The global community moving needs a strengthened and reformed architecture based on the UN Charter, the official said.
"As the world community moves toward multipolarity we desperately need... a strengthened and reformed multilateral architecture based on the UN Charter and the international law," Guterres said.

The 15th BRICS Summit, held in Johannesburg, is closing its doors on Thursday. South Africa, the bloc's 2023 chair, invited delegations from dozens of other countries and international organizations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and African Union chief Moussa Faki Mahamat.
Earlier in the day, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that BRICS leaders had decided to invite Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to join the group with full membership from January 1, 2024.
