Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev suggested on Thursday that BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) should join efforts for global peace and stability, given the shared interests of both organizations. The initiative is aimed at "making progress on global security and stability as well as establishing a more rational political and economic international order," the Kazakh president added. Kazakhstan Wants to Join Efforts of BRICS, SCO for Global Peace
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is an international organization founded by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia and Uzbekistan in 2001 and expanded since then. According to SCO, one of the main goals is to "jointly ensure and maintain peace, security and stability in the region".
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev suggested on Thursday that BRICS and the
Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) should join efforts for global peace and stability, given the shared interests of both organizations.
"Given the interest and priorities shared by BRICS and the SCO, I propose to combine our efforts in the following key areas. We should seek a suitable formula for peace, stability and security based on the UN Charter. To this end, at the SCO summit this year, I proposed the initiative 'On World Unity for Just Peace and Harmony,'" Tokayev said as the current SCO chair at the BRICS+ Dialogue during the bloc's summit in South Africa.
The initiative is aimed at
"making progress on global security and stability as well as establishing a more rational political and economic international order," the Kazakh president added.
"The BRICS and BRICS+ partners could cooperate in advancing this initiative for the common good," Tokayev said.
BRICS — the group uniting the world's largest developing economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — is holding its annual top-level summit in Johannesburg from Tuesday to Thursday.
