Ugandan Leader Reiterates Disapproval of World Bank's Loan Suspension, Calls Lender 'Insufferable'
14:37 18.08.2023 (Updated: 14:40 18.08.2023) Following the adoption of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill by the Ugandan Parliament in late May, the World Bank suspended loans to Uganda earlier this month on the grounds that the law "contradicts" its values. The decision was rebuked by the country's authorities.
Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has once again condemned the World Bank’s decision to withdraw the funding for the country, calling some western actors, including the lender, "insufferable".
"Some of these [Western] imperialist actors, are insufferable. [...] They are so shallow, they do not know when and where to stop," he said on social media.
The leader also noted that foreign aid and loans are welcome, but "are neither decisive nor indispensable elements for [Ugandan] desired social-economic transformation."
In his previous message of August 9, Museveni
estimated the World Bank's move as an attempt to "coerce [Uganda] into abandoning [its] faith, culture, principles and sovereignty, using money."
In June, in response to the law, the United States
imposed visa restrictions on Ugandan officials and the US President Joe Biden threatened aid cuts and other sanctions against the country. The government of the East African state, in turn,
called the threats an "unacceptable blackmail."
The Anti-Homosexuality Act
criminalizes the promotion of homosexuality and provides the death penalty for certain offenses, such as engaging in a homosexual intercourse with an underage child.
Ugandan MP and leader of the opposition Justice Forum (JEEMA) party, Asuman Basalirwa, who introduced the bill, in an exclusive interview to Sputnik Africa underlined that the goal of the law is to protect the traditional values of the Ugandan community, which are rooted in the country's history.
