On August 10, an emergency Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) summit was held on a situation in Niger, where military leaders recently ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. ECOWAS reportedly instructed the Defense Chiefs of Staff Committee to immediately activate reserve forces to restore constitutional order in Niger.
An emergency meeting of the ECOWAS's Chiefs of Defense Staffs meeting on the situation in Niger will be held on August 17 and 18 in Accra, the capital of Ghana, reports say.
Earlier, media stated that the emergency meeting was supposed to be carried out earlier but was postponed due to the unavailability of the organization's troops.

Some ECOWAS Leaders Follow Western 'Patrons' Will by Threatening Niger: Tchiani
Some leaders of the ECOWAS are fulfilling the will of their Western patrons by making aggressive threats against Niger and its people, leader of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, Abdourahmane Tchiani, has stated.

"The CNSP and the government of Niger are surprised and outraged by the threatening attacks of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara," Tchiani said.

"The statement of Ouattara and some of his colleagues, as well as the decisions on sanctions against Niger made at the emergency ECOWAS summit on August 10, is a manifestation of the will of their Western patrons, who are implementing their agenda in West Africa. In order to preserve their interests, which do not meet the aspirations of the people of Niger, they are trying to organize illegal and unjust aggression against Niger. But all these threats are unable to shake the determination of the people and the leadership of Niger to make the necessary changes for the sake of saving the country and ensuring the interests of its people."

The Nigeria's Northern Elders Forum calls on the Economic Community of West African Countries and the African Union to hold talks with the military who seized power in Niger, Alhaji Aliyu Saulawa, acting chairman of the forum stated as cited by media. a local media outlet reports, citing a statement by the acting chairman of the forum.

"ECOWAS should be mindful of the repercussions, the aftermath of war, it’s not something that is very simple. [...] Let ECOWAS try to mediate diplomatically, let them meet these military leaders and ask for Bazoum’s safety," he stressed.

Saulawa warned ECOWAS against any hopes that the military in Niger will give up power.

The rebel government of Niger on Monday summoned the country's ambassador to Cote d'Ivoire for consultation because of the words of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara about the decision of ECOWAS to launch a military operation in Niger, representative of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) formed after the coup, Colonel Amadou Abdrahman stated, as cited by media.

According to reports, the rebels who seized power in Niger expressed "complete rejection of the statements made by Alassane Ouattara, [...] and decided to summone the ambassador of Niger to Abidjan for consultation."

US Believes Military Intervention in Niger 'Last Resort' Option
Military intervention by the ECOWAS to address the coup in Niger ought to be an option of last resort, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel has stated.
"ECOWAS has been also very clear, and very clear publicly, that military intervention should be a last resort – something that we agree with, and we continue to be focused on finding a diplomatic solution and are in close contact with ECOWAS and their leadership on this," Patel said during a press briefing.
After ECOWAS hinted at the possibility of military intervention in Niger, the coup leaders have agreed to begin talks with ECOWAS, new Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine reportedly said.
