On July 26, Niger's presidential guard deposed and detained President Mohamed Bazoum. The guard’s commander, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, proclaimed himself interim leader. Afterwards, the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) issued an ultimatum to resort to military means if the Niger's military do not return the president to power.
Recently, Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, a famous Islamic priest and the head of Nigeria's Izala Salafist Movement, has met with Niger's coup leader Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani and military-appointed Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine.
The meeting was held following the ECOWAS's threat to militarily engage in the situation in Niger.
According to Zeine, Tchiani expressed willingness to engage in talks with the Community.

"We have agreed, and the leader of our country has given the green light for dialogue," he stated.

Zeine has also expressed hope for ECOWAS to come to Niger so that the sides will be able to discuss "how the sanctions imposed against us [Niger] will be lifted".

Niger Rebel Leader Hints at Threat to Nigeria
The leader of the Nigerien rebel military suggested over the weekend that the coup in Niger had saved neighboring Nigeria from an imminent threat, a Nigerian newspaper has reported.
Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani told a Nigerian delegation of Islamic religious leaders that the military takeover was well-intended, a Nigerian news outlet has reported.
"They struck to starve off an imminent threat that would have affected not only Niger Republic but also Nigeria," senior Nigerian cleric, Sheik Bala Lau, quoted Tchiani as saying during their Saturday meeting.
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, who doubles as chairman of West African regional bloc ECOWAS, condemned the coup in late July. Nigeria hosted an ECOWAS leaders’ summit in Abuja this week that agreed to deploy a standby force to Niger to force the military to reinstate the deposed president.

Nigeriens Protest Against French Military Presence Outside Niamey Base
Dozens of Nigeriens angered by continued French military presence in the western African country rallied outside the French base in Niamey on Sunday, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
French troops have been restricted to the military base in the Nigerien capital since the July coup deposed France-backed President Mohamed Bazoum and brought the military to power.
The demonstrators chanted anti-France and pro-Russia slogans, the correspondent said. Law enforcers were deployed, but they did not interfere.
Nigeriens have been routinely demonstrating outside the Niamey base to demand that Niger's former colonial master withdraw troops from its soil. Thousands rallied outside the facility on Friday.
