The BRICS bloc was formed in 2006. Initially, it consisted of four countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2011, South Africa joined the group. Recently, South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor noted that 23 countries have submitted formal applications for joining the association so far.
The heads of all the states that have applied to join the BRICS have received an invitation to participate in the summit of the group in Johannesburg, a diplomatic source told Russian media.

"The heads of African states were invited to the summit. All the countries that applied for membership in the BRICS were also invited, there are about 20 of them. We can't name the exact number yet. But it will be huge," the source noted.
