Earlier this week, South African Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Naledi Pandor announced that a total of 23 leaders had expressed their countries' desire to join the BRICS economic bloc by submitting official applications. According to the minister, many more countries showed interest in joining the group by making informal approaches about the possibilities of BRICS membership. The issue of membership expansion has been discussed at various levels since the first BRIC Summit in 2009. A year later, South Africa was welcomed to the organization as the first beneficiary of expansion. The upcoming summit will also see discussions on the expansion.
