Khartoum wants UN Special Representative for Sudan Volker Perthes to quit his job, Sudanese Ambassador to the United Nations Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed said on Wednesday. However, United Nations spokesperson Farhan Haq said Perthes continues to be the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General dealing with Sudan and the United Nations expects him to provide further briefings to the UN Security Council when he needs to. Earlier on Wednesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the Sudanese government had threatened to pull the UN mission (UNITAMS) out of Sudan if Perthes briefed the UN Security Council. In mid-April, clashes broke out between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, with the epicenter of the fighting located in the country's capital Khartoum. The parties to the conflict have since introduced a number of temporary nationwide ceasefires, but the conflict has not yet been settled.
