Which African Countries Could Support Military Intervention in Niger
14:50 09.08.2023 (Updated: 17:21 11.08.2023) On July 26, Niger's presidential guard ousted and detained the country's President Mohamed Bazoum, closed the borders and imposed a curfew in the state "until further notice." The guard's commander, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, proclaimed himself the president of the caretaker National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.
Following the coup, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the development and suspended financial aid to the country.
ECOWAS gave coup leaders one week to reinstate Niger's elected president and restore order, hinting that it would resort to military intervention otherwise.
Its ultimatum expired past Sunday.
