Zimbabwe Ready to Export 40,000 Tons of Maize
The Zimbabwe's government goal for self-sufficiency in terms of maize production was achieved for the first time in 2022, according to the country's state media.
Zimbabwe is prepared to deliver 40,000 tons of cereals or maize to East Africa, announced Zimbabwe's Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary, Dr. John Basera.
"We are also targeting Central Africa. We have enquiries in countries in Central Africa and we will be exporting over 40.000 of cereals or maize to East Africa this year. We are also looking at the prospects of exporting wheat this year," the Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary of Zimbabwe said.
Grain exports appeared to be possible again due to "the substantial surpluses grown by the farmers," according to the
state media.
This season, Zimbabwe has so far harvested over 2.3 million tons of maize and 300,000 tons of traditional grains and there is "carryover stock - 300,000 of maize from the previous season," the state media reported.
Zimbabwe maize production is projected to be up to 3.7 million tons next summer.
