On July 26, Niger's presidential guard ousted and detained country's President Mohamed Bazoum. On July 31, ECOWAS condemned the coup, suspended financial aid to the country, and gave Niger's coup leaders one week to reinstate detained president, or the community would use "all measures," including military, to restore order in the African nation.
The coup leaders in Niger, who ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in July, closed airspace on Sunday against the background of the ultimatum of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and citing the threat of military intervention.
"Faced with the threat of intervention, which is becoming clearer through the preparation of neighboring countries, Niger's airspace is closed from this day on Sunday... for all aircraft until further notice," AFP quoted the rebels' statement.

ECOWAS to Hold Meeting on Niger on Thursday
The meeting will be held on Thursday, in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.
"The ECOWAS leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the summit," the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said on Monday.

Air France Suspends Flights to Burkina Faso, Mali - Reports
The French airline Air France announced that it is suspending flights to Burkina Faso and Mali until August 11 after coup leaders in Niger closed the country's airspace, Reuters reported on Monday, citing an Air France spokesperson.
Air France expects that the remaining flights from airports in sub-Saharan Africa will take more time after Niger closes its airspace, the official added.

US Media: ECOWAS Needs More Time to Prepare for Military Actions in Niger
The militaries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) need more time to prepare for military intervention in Niger against the background of the military takeover in the country, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing a senior commander from one of the ECOWAS countries.
"For the moment, we need to build up the strength of our units before taking part in such a military action. The success of any military action depends on good preparation," the commander said.
He added that the bloc would continue to pressure the coup leaders in Niger through economic and financial sanctions and seek support for the trade embargo from other international institutions, such as the African Union.

Thousands of Nigeriens defied the ECOWAS deadline for the return to power of the ousted president to rally in support of the rebel military in the national capital of Niamey.
The 15-nation Economic Community of Western African States issued an ultimatum last Sunday, giving Niger's military leaders 7 days to reverse the coup or face a military intervention.
Crowds of Nigeriens appeared undaunted on Sunday night as the deadline was set to run out, a Sputnik correspondent reported from Niamey.
Demonstrators chanted slogans in support of rebel commander Abdourahmane Tchian, the former head of President Mohamed Bazoum’s elite guard, and waving Nigerien and Russian national colors.

Nigerian Senate Urges ECOWAS to Seek Diplomatic Solutions to Situation in Niger
Nigeria's Senate has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to seek diplomatic solutions to the Nigerien military coup, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said.
On August 4, Nigerian news agency Daily Trust reported that Nigerian President and ECOWAS Chairman Bola Ahmed Tinubu had briefed the country's parliament on the organization's proposed military action plans and sanctions against Niger amid the military coup.
The Senate called on the Nigerian president to urge other ECOWAS leaders to strengthen political and diplomatic opportunities to address the political problems in Niger, Akpabio said during Saturday's plenary session.
At the same time, Akpabio said the Senate admitted that Tinubu did not seek parliamentary approval to "start a war" in his August 4 letter.
