African Nations Experience Lithium Boom

Subscribe
Over the past few years, lithium, a crucial component of batteries used in numerous modern devices, has significantly increased in price, while the race to secure its supply has heated up. Against this backdrop, lithium-rich African countries embarked on developing new mines and creating their own lithium refining industries.
The shift to greener energy sources and the net-zero goals set by governments across the globe mean increased demand for key battery metals such as lithium, which is used in the production of batteries for various tech items, ranging from laptops to electric cars.
As a result of continued exploration, identified lithium resources worldwide have increased significantly to approximately 98 million tonnes.
In this light, Africa is becoming a major supplier of the metal, which is essential for the so-called green transition.
According to S&P Global Commodity Insights, mines across the continent will increase production of lithium by more than 30 times from last year’s volume by 2027. Within a period of about 4 years, the export of lithium raw materials from Africa will reach 12% of the world's overall supplies, up from 1% in 2022.
Mali, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe are expected to become the largest suppliers of lithium on the continent.
