Last month, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the 94-year-old politician and traditional prime minister to the Zulu nation, underwent a procedure for back pain management. On July 24, his office said he had been readmitted for further treatment.
While getting treatment after his readmission to the hospital, Prince Buthelezi developed another health complication and will therefore remain hospitalized to receive the necessary care, his family said in an update on his health on Wednesday morning.
The South African politician and founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was readmitted to hospital last week after his "back pain did not subside sufficiently," according to the recent statement.
And while Buthelezi was in the hospital, doctors detected a complication and advised him to continue treatment. It was noted that his hospital stay will be determined by the pace of his recovery.

"He has since developed a complication and therefore remains in hospital at this stage to receive the necessary care. The duration of his hospital stay will depend on how fast his body can recover from the complication," read the statement, obtained by Sputnik Africa.

In July, Buthelezi was admitted for routine tests and treatment for a persistent back pain. Later, his office confirmed that he was not in a critical condition, but had to receive further treatment.
The traditional prime minister will celebrate his 95th birthday later this August. In the statement, his family appealed "to the nation to allow time for his recovery and rest," reiterating that he is receiving the appropriate medical care.
