On July 26, members of the Nigerien presidential guard said in a statement broadcast on national television that they had overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum, closed the borders and imposed a curfew in the country "until further notice." The guard's commander, Abdourahmane Tchiani, proclaimed himself the country's new leader.
The Committee of Chiefs of Defense Staff of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold an extraordinary meeting on the situation in Niger from August 2-4, ECOWAS said on Tuesday.
"The Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CCDS) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will meet in Abuja from August 2nd to 4th, 2023 on the political situation in the Republic of Niger," the organization said on Twitter.
On Sunday, ECOWAS gave Niger's coup leaders one week to reinstate the detained president or it would use "all measures," including military, to restore order in the African nation.
Moreover, ECOWAS suspended all financial aid to Niger, froze the assets of the rebels, their families and supporters, and imposed a ban on commercial flights to and from the country.
On Tuesday, France and the European Union started to evacuate its citizens.

Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, who proclaimed himself Niger's new head of state after a coup on July 26, has appointed military commanders as new governors in all Nigerien regions, media reported on Wednesday.
Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Bulama has been appointed as the governor of the Agadez region, ​​Brig. Gen. Iro Umaru has become the head of the Dosso region, ​​Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Bagadoma has taken the office of the Diffa region's chief and ​​Brig. Gen. Abdou Assouman Harouna has been appointed as Niamey's regional head, the Nigerien Press Agency reported.
The news outlet said that Maj. Col. Oumarou Tawaye was appointed as the Tahoua region's governor, Police Inspector General Issoufou Mamane assumed the office of the Maradi governor, Lieut. Col. Russia Against Deterioration of Situation in Niger, Calls for Dialogue - Foreign Ministry
Russia believes it is important to avoid further deterioration of situation in Niger, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday, adding that Moscow calls for dialogue between the sides of the conflict.
“We consider it extremely important to prevent further degradation of the situation in the country, we believe it is urgent to organize a national dialogue to restore civil peace, ensure law and order,” Zakharova told a briefing.
The spokeswoman added that a threat of use of external force against Niger will not add to conflict resolution.
“When looking for ways to resolve the conflict in Niger, we continue to proceed from the principle that African problems require African solutions. We expect that efforts will be made through the African Union and sub-regional organizations,” Zakharova said.

US Military Suspended Training With Niger's Armed Forces Amid Unrest - Pentagon
The US military suspended its training program with Niger's armed forces after unrest broke out in the country, Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said during a press briefing.
"We continue to stay in contact with the Niger military, but in terms of training, for example, those types of things, that's been suspended," Ryder told reporters on Tuesday.
