Niger Self-Proclaimed Leader Warns ECOWAS Against Military Intervention
Earlier in the day, the commander of the Niger Presidential Guard, General Omar Tchiani, who is the self-proclaimed leader of the country, warned the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) and its allies against military intervention in Niger, whose membership has been suspended due to the ongoing crisis.
"We warn ECOWAS and its allies against any military intervention in the city of Niamey, so we will be obliged to defend ourselves to the last of our strength," Tchiani said on social media.
On Sunday, following an emergency summit in Abuja, Nigeria, the 15-nation economic community demanded the "immediate release and reinstatement" of President Bazoum, elected in 2021. ECOWAS also declared that it closed borders with Niger.
ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray said the organization had suspended all financial aid to Niger, frozen the assets of the rebels, their families and supporters, and imposed a ban on their movement.
