The Mystery of the Red-Haired Woman: Bank of Zambia Confirms Facebook Hacking
15:26 25.07.2023 (Updated: 16:20 25.07.2023) In the early hours of Monday, hackers changed the profile picture and cover photo on the official Facebook* page of Zambia's central bank, drawing mixed reactions from social media users.
The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has confirmed that hackers have taken over its Facebook page and asked people not to interact with the affected page until further notice.
"The Bank of Zambia regrets to inform members of the public of a cyber security incident affecting the Bank’s Facebook page. Members of the public are urged not to interact with the affected page until further communication," a statement by the BoZ read.
On Monday morning, hackers replaced the Bank of Zambia's official website's profile and cover images, which featured an image of the bank's logo, with an image of an unknown red-haired woman.
The bank stated that the incident is now being thoroughly investigated as the bank has engaged law enforcement to address the issue.
"We are conducting a thorough review of the incidence and working closely with law enforcement to ensure it is addressed," the BoZ said.
BoZ's Assistant Director for Communication Besnart Mwanza assured that the institution is working to restore the
Facebook page to full functionality as soon as possible.
It was noted that customers and the general public should remain cautious and vigilant of potential phishing attempts or suspicious activity from the page. Mwanza urged Zambians to use other official platforms to communicate with the bank, including Twitter and LinkedIn.
The country's central bank also emphasized that the
incident won't affect the safety and security of customers' financial information, saying its core systems remain secure.
