The South African city of Johannesburg hosted a meeting of national security advisors of the BRICS group with the participation of the "Friends of BRICS" this July 24-25, ahead of next month's summit. The event was seen as an important platform for discussing security issues and cooperation between the BRICS member states and their partners.
The countries of the economic bloc and the friends of BRICS should work together to ensure peace and security across the world, said Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, South Africa's minister in the presidency, at the meeting of high representatives of the BRICS states in charge of security issues.

"This is the time for us to seek resilience and extend friendship to our people and it is for that reason South Africa deemed it fit to invite the friends of BRICS to join us, so that we can converse as a family on this day, and chart a way forward together for global resilience for global peace and innovation," she said.

The meeting, held in the "Friends of BRICS" format, focused on topical issues in the field of security, which is the key to political and economic stability. Secretaries of security councils and national security advisers of the BRICS member states and other nations discussed current challenges facing the world and prospects for security cooperation.
According to Ntshavheni, the "Friends of BRICS" countries who attended the meeting included Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. She noted that the event is expected to generate enduring partnerships resulting "in enhanced global development and strengthened global resilience and global peace."

Russia, China Resist Hegemonic Actions Abusing Minority Interests: Russia's Security Council Head
Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee, who is also taking part in the high-profile meeting in Johannesburg, pointed to the growing security threat in cyberspace that brought certain challenges for the developing world.

"Cyber technology has been developing fast, which has significantly improved peoples capacity and shaped the world. That said, we are now seeing growing trends of camp-based division, militarizing, fragmentation [...] in cyberspace. This has caused impact and challenges to emerging markets and developing countries," Wang said.

Ajit Kumar Doval, a national security advisor of India, called on the BRICS member countries to invest in technology to fight cybercrime. He noted that it is necessary to prioritize cyber security investing, enhance capacity building in the field, advance joint initiatives and foster international cooperation.
Secretary of the National Security Council of Russia, Nikolay Patrushev, for his part, stated that many nations across the world expressed their interest in joining BRICS and deepening cooperation with the group due to the fact that this format does not have "any confrontational or hidden agenda."
The meeting of representatives responsible for security issues in the bloc's countries is traditionally held before the summit of the leaders. The previous event of this kind took place in June last year via videoconference. This year, the 15th BRICS Summit will be held on August 22-24 in Johannesburg.
