Former Boxing Champ Mayweather Visits Political Event in Support of Zimbabwe's Ruling Party
11:53 14.07.2023 (Updated: 10:47 03.08.2023) Zimbabwe's ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF) party has organized the rally as part of the government's efforts to win over young voters in anticipation of general elections scheduled for the next month.
Floyd Mayweather, a former world boxing champion from the US, participated in a political event in Zimbabwe on Thursday.
In Mabvuku, one of Zimbabwe's oldest townships and a suburb of the capital Harare, Mayweather was greeted with song and dance by the country's ruling ZANU–PF party members.
Gold magnate Scott Sakupwanya, one of President
Emmerson Mnangagwa's closest allies, stated that he has invited Mayweather.
"People thought I was lying when I said I would bring Mayweather, but he is here. This shows that what I will promise in this election will come to pass," Sakupwanya told media during the party's rally.
The 46-year-old former boxer entertained the Zimbabweans with a workout that included jumping rope and punching.
Additionally, he saw three bouts featuring Zimbabwe's emerging boxers.
At the event, some young people were reported to voice support for Mnangagwa, 80, who is running for re-election on August 23.
"I am happy to see Mayweather here in Zimbabwe, it is his first time to come here. I am registered to vote, and I am going to vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa," a 34-year-old spectator told media.
The two major political parties, ZANU–PF and the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), are anticipating that the youth vote would be a pivotal battleground in the forthcoming
elections.
The election will take place in the midst of a severe economic crisis, significant inflation, and a currency that, according to reports, fell more than 50% against the US dollar last month.
